The DGCA approves drone delivery Covid vaccine

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India (DGCA) has approved two feasibility studies for the delivery of the Covid-19 vaccine by drone. The Authority has approved the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to study whether the Covid-19 vaccine can be delivered by drone. The research will be conducted on the IIT campus. IIT is at the forefront of UAV technology in India and is well-known for developing UAV helicopters.

Drones can be used for long-term surveillance and vaccine distribution. The helicopter has a load-bearing capacity of up to 5 kilograms and can cover a distance of 50 kilometers. As the weight decreases, it can increase to 100 kilometers. Professor Abhishek from the Department of Aerospace Engineering said: “It runs on gasoline, can fly for up to four hours, and can distribute vaccines in remote areas.” Given that India is in the middle of the Covid-19 epidemic, the sooner the vaccine is distributed, the sooner it will be distributed. it is good.

In the first test phase, the drone will remain within the line of sight, and if successful, it will move beyond the line of sight (BVLOS). An official commented: “Once we enter the second stage, we will seek permission from the Ministry of Aviation and Interior. We believe that it may not be far away to use drones to deliver vaccines.” The DGCA also approved the Telangana government’s standard operating procedures.
